Orient is the iridescence from
the light reflected from the inside of the pearl. If
the layers of translucent aragonite are perfectly aligned,
they act as a lens, bending the light. This light returns
to the surface as the shimmering rainbow aura that is
the hallmark of a quality pearl. These visible shades
beyond the basic color can vary within the same atoll
or even within the same pearl farm.
